Visit the Starion Bank Gallery at the Plains Art Museum from February 2, 2021 - March 15, 2021 to view an amazing display of work from North Dakota's talented your artists and writers!

Awarding the exceptional artistic and literary talent of North Dakota teenagers and bringing their remarkable work to a wide audience, the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Exhibition celebrates the vision, ingenuity and talent of these artists with pride. Plains Art Museum and Red River Valley Writing Project have proudly partnered to showcase the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in grades 7 – 12, since 2015. Throughout that time, the exhibition quality has grown tremendously, reflecting the growing prominence of young artists in the state. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Ceremony is the centerpiece of North Dakota’s Scholastic Art & Writing program, recognizing the vital role that arts education plays in cultivating more creative and thoughtful students. During the virtual ceremony we will announce the state’s winners of the literary and visual art competitors on display at the Museum’s Starion Bank Gallery. 

Come join us at the virtual ceremony and be inspired by the award winners, readings, interviews, video footage of the exhibit, and keynote speaker Maria Modi.

Hosted by Plains Art Museum, NDSU, and the Red River Valley Writing Project.

2021 Summer Institute: 

Engaged Virtual Writing

for K-College Teachers

CMU Professor of Literacy & Technology and Chippewa River Writing Project Director Troy Hicks

& RRVWP co-directors Ben Melby and Angela Hase

 

The Red River Valley Writing Project is a  professional development and support network for K-college 

teachers. Its focus is to improve the teaching and use of writing across all grade levels and subject areas.  

Our mission 

•Create a network of teachers who can share their successes in teaching and using writing. 

•Develop a community of teachers who write. •Encourage personal and professional growth in the 

teaching of writing. 

•Improve the writing of students in the region. 


What does the Summer Institute offer? 

As a site of the National Writing Project, the  RRVWP Summer Institute offers participants a  place to read

and discuss ideas about teaching  writing and using writing to teach—plus time to  write. Readings include

common and individual selections to meet the needs and interests of all  participants in the institute. 

Teachers also share best teaching practices through hands-on teaching  demonstrations and explore the 

teaching of writing by writing. 


Who can participate? 

Teachers of any subject, at any grade level, in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota
may apply. Since National Writing Project summer institutes are invitational, all participants must apply 
directly to the RRVWP.
 

Stipend & Credit  

Participants are eligible to receive a $500 stipend. Institute fellows are eligible for 2 credits through 

NDSU. Requirements: participation, book discussions, and teaching demonstration.


When is the Institute? 

Pre-institute orientation 

Friday, May 14th  (5:15-6:45 pm)

Saturday, May 15th (9:00-11:30 am) 

Summer Institute 

Monday-Thursday June 14-17 (8:45-12:00)

Monday-Thursday June 21-24 (8:45-12:00)


Additional 1 credit option to participate in

NWP Midwest Virtual Conference, July 30-31
