Saturday Seminars

Stellar Sentences

Eight local educators gathered on Saturday, November 21, at Central High School in Grand Forks to work on quality narrative writing by beginning at the sentence level.

Led by Red River Valley Writing Project Writer-in-Residence Nancy Devine and Co-Director Pam Fisher, the group examined sentences, discussed what makes for quality sentences, and wrote their own sentences modeled on mentor sentences. Participants learned the stellar sentence techniques of using appositives, absolute phrases, and postnominal adjectives.

Andrea Scherer and Katie Bolstad rank literary sentences according to their quality.

Nancy Devine leads the group in writing absolute phrases.
