Young Authors Guide

Where young writers can find literary magazines to read, places to publish their writing (including scriptwriting, films, filmmaking), and legitimate contests. A select list of children's, teen, and young adult publications in print and online that have open submissions with guidelines, an editorial selection process, and are kept up to date. Some publish only young writers, some publish all ages for young readers. For specific submission guidelines, visit the publication's website.

A Note to Young Writers: Publications expect you to read their publications to know what kinds of work they publish. Take time to become familiar by reading their content online or requesting a sample copy. DO NOT just send your work without having read the publication. It's a mistake too often made by many writers, and it annoys the publisher. Do not annoy publishers.

A Note to Teachers: Please read the above note to Young Writers. If you assign your students to submit their writing for publication, also assign them to research the market and find an appropriate publication for their work.

If you're thinking about sending some work off for publication, New Pages' Calls for Submissions page is a great resource for finding publications that are looking for work.

Publishers of student writing and more

If your students are interested in getting their writing published, they (and you) should check out the Young Authors Guide at New Pages. The guide includes magazines that are looking for student writing to publish as well as contests for student writers.

New Pages has amazing resources for all writers, including calls for submissions and magazine reviews.

Important note: You should not pay for a book by some publisher who has published your work. In particular you should never pay something like $24.95 for such a book. Publishers should give you something if they publish your work.
