Open data's potential value

The increasingly ubiquitous flow of data across education has caused anxiety among parents and privacy advocates, who fear that information about students will be released or shared with outside entities without permission.     I love that opening the linked article gave me a pop-up ad to sell an educational reading product. The economic growth comes from education companies' ability to target-market consumers more. From the parent's perspective, the "openness of K12 data" is primarily about the continued monetization of public education so that businesses can have access to data about my child to try to sell more stuff.
